Maths Fun -2

October 5, 2006

1+ 3 = 4

2 + 2 = 4

3-1 = 4

6-2 =4

5-1 =4

7-3 = 4

8-4 =4

9- 5 = 4

8/2= 4

16/4 =4

2*2 = 4

a = b

இரண்டு பக்கமும் a வை பெருக்கவும்

a*a = ab

இரண்டு பக்கமும் (a*a – 2ab) கூட்டவும்

a*a + a*a – 2ab = ab + a*a – 2ab

2(a*a – ab) = a*a – ab

இரண்டு பக்கமும் (a*a – ab)  வகுக்கவும்..

2 = 1

இரண்டு பக்கமும் 2 ஆல் பெருக்கவும்.

2*2 = 1*2

4 = 2

4 = (3-1)

என்ன கணக்கு சரியா?

    aiyo aiyo…enga poi muttikarathu…ethu enna kanakku.

    a^2 = ab implies a^2 – ab = 0 and obviously

    2(a^2-ab) = (a^2 – ab) because 2*0 = 0

    even with your logic when you divide a^2-ab on both sides, you’ll get 2 = (0/0)

    but actually 0/0 is indeterminate and it 0/0 is not 1.

    because 0*0 = 0, 0*1 =0 … 0 * anything = 0

    and therefore when you divide 0 /0 you won’t know what is the result..and thus indeterminate value.

    The flaw in your proof is..how could u randomly choose a=b and start off. Its like you are directly taking 2=1 and proving it right. But there is one more proof which I remember we had seen it together in one of the book that mohan’s dad had when we were in Township. I still remember that proof..let me know if you need it. Even there we can find a flaw but very much hidden.

    Hi Vizhiyan..
    If a=b then your proof is correct…
    But please let me know how ‘a’ is equal to ‘b’.

    Guys,

    The proof is not valid for the reasons I’ve stated earlier.

    2(a^2 – ab) = (a^2 – ab) if and only if

    a^2-ab = 0 and further when you have

    2*0 = 0, you can’t cancel 0 on both sides and say

    2=1. It is not sensible.

    Can u pls explain the first step a=b?
    If that equates then everything said is accepted.

    to srinvit,

    see the thing started like this…you assume arbitary equation a=b and multiply both sides by a to get
    a^2=ab

    if a^2=ab then a^2 – ab = 0.

    according to the original equation

    a^2 = ab and you are adding a^2 – 2ab on both sides

    therefore a^2 + a^2 -2ab = ab + a^2 – 2ab

    2a^2 – 2ab = a^2 -ab

    and you take 2 as common

    2(a^2 – ab) = a^2 -ab

    till this things are correct but since a^2 – ab = 0

    you can’t cancel a^2 – ab on both sides and say 2=1. thats wrong

    because this will become 2*0 = 0…to cancel 0 on both sides and say 2 = 1 is senseless and not plausible.

    thats all…thats the flaw in the proof…
